While energy efficiency may be cost-efficient strategy to reduce both GHG emissions and energy costs for shipping companies in the short run, stringent regulation is necessary in the longer term (2020-2050). Research is needed on what the transition to a reduction in total GHG emissions from the shipping sector entails in the form of new policy instruments, standards, business models etc.
